For Professor Tomilayo O. Adekanye, Saturday September 2, 2023 was, and will long remain, a momentous and memorable day of double honour, double joy, and double celebration. For, what was initially billed and assumed by the generality of distinguished invitees to and guests at a solely academic albeit combined with some marketing affair (i.e. salesmanship), and to have been concerned only with the Presentation and Launching of her new book on WOMEN, AGRICULTURE, AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: Perspectives from Nigeria (the marketing part of the Event was a huge success as it raised enough money from the book sales, donations, and a variety of promisory pledges to cover the expenses of renting the Hall, payment for the services of attendants, and entertainment of guests, if not all of costs for the book production), much later and towards the end of The Day’s Programme, became converted into a festive occasion, which was actually all along so intended by the Event’s organisers. It had to do with the choice of the date for the Event, the ambience and decorations at Dr. Olusegun Aganga Hall, the International Conference Centre (ICC), University of Ibadan, being the venue where Event took place, the whole celebratory atmosphere of pomp and pageantry visible everywhere, the presence of a one-man band orchestra seated to the front and at the right-end corner of the Hall and dishing out interlude of delightful pieces of music both classic and contemporary, the huge array of distinguished guests and attendees, including professional colleagues, close family members, friends, and associates that it attracted, and above all the calibre of eminent personalities and dignitaries that the Event’s organisers had succeeded in attracting for and gotten seated at the High Table (see https://abatom.com.ng/documents/CV/tomi_adekanye_cv.pdf under “honours and distinctions”). All those must have contributed towards making the day a momentous and memorable day of double honour, double honour, and double celebration for the Author-Celebrant Professor Tomilayo Adekanye. Of course, there were also the speeches, remarks, and tributes, indeed the whole gamut of proceedings at the Event. In the meantime, the transition from the Book Presentation cum Launch to the Birthday Anniversary celebrations was effected in a “Brief and Surprise Announcement at the Book Launch (the alternative title given for that Announcement was “September 2 Anniversary Always on My Mind: What, How, and Why?”), a rather poetic piece of intervention, made towards the end of Programme, where Emeritus Professor Adekanye, speaking in his capacity as the Author’s Consort, announced that that day chosen for the Event on Book Presentation and Launch, being Saturday September 2, 2023, was also the Author’s Birthday Anniversary. “Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! The Celebrant, Professor Tomilayo O. Adekanye, is 81 years old today”, the Brief and Surprise Announcement concluded. Thereupon, and in an almost seamlessly choreographed manner, cracker-style shots were let go producing bursts of smoke in various colours, plus a confetti of flowers, which filled the air in front of the Hall, even as the popular song of “Happy Birthday to you”, along with its refrain “Many Happy Returns of the Day, Long Life and Prosperity”, began to be spontaneously chorused by all the Guests led by the One-Man Band orchestra. That “Happy Birthday” song was followed by a brief interlude of music with the rendition of a couple of popular Gospel lyrics. After this, the Master of Ceremonies invited the Author along with the Spouse to come forward to by-then unveiled Birthday Cake stand in front of the Hall for the remaining activities of the Day: Cutting and sharing of the Birthday Cake; Toasting and clinging of glasses of drinks for and in honour of the Celebrant; and Having group photograph sessions with Guests. The Programme of Event for the Day ended, as it had also previously begun, with Prayers: The Opening one, having been earlier said just before noontime by The Chaplain, Chapel of The Resurrection, University of Ibadan, Ven. Dr. V. I Oladele; and the Closing one, at about 3.00 pm, by The Minister, All Saints’ Church, Jericho, Ibadan, Ven. (Dr.) SFO Jolayemi. Thus ended officially the Two-in-One Event of Saturday September 2, 2023 centring on Professor Tomilayo Adekanye; although there were indications that the private-family side to those celebrations was about to commence at another location and continue from there on right until dusk.
